JUMPSTART PROGRAM

Skate Canada’s JumpStart program is an introductory figure skating program designed to prepare young skaters for either competitive or recreational figure skating.

JumpStart is an invitation-only program for skaters aged 5–8 who have completed CanSkate Stage 2 and have been identified through the CanSkate program as demonstrating potential and readiness for further figure skating development.

Skaters develop fundamental figure skating skills through structured group lessons. The program also incorporates off-ice training to help develop balance, flexibility, strength, coordination, and overall athletic development.

Program Director approval is required to participate in JumpStart.

  • Target AudienceChildren aged 4-8 who have shown aptitude in the CanSkate program. COACH APPROVAL REQUIRED TO REGISTER.
  • Program FocusIntroduces basic figure skating skills in a progressive and sequential manner, including edges, stroking, jumps, spins, and musical interpretation.
  • Lesson FormatSmall group lessons with a low coach-to-student ratio (1:5) are led by Skate Canada certified coaches.
  • ProgressionA commitment of 2–3 days per week is required. Emphasis on correct technique in fundamental skills, along with dryland training to enhance overall skating abilities. JumpStart skaters also participate in fun activities like games, themed days, and the annual Holiday Ice Show. JumpStart serves as a bridge to competitive or recreational figure skating, preparing skaters for more advanced levels.
  • CoachesNCCP certified coaches deliver the program, ensuring quality instruction.
  • PathwayJumpStart serves as a bridge to competitive or recreational figure skating, preparing skaters for more advanced levels.
  • EquipmentSkaters are required to wear figure skates and must wear CSA-certified helmets. Fitted athletic clothing is required
