CANSKATE PROGRAM

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages (3+). It focuses on fun, participation, and the development of fundamental skating skills like agility, balance, and control. The program uses active and engaging sessions with visual aids and music to create a positive learning environment. CanSkate provides a foundation for various ice sports and recreational skating. 

  • Target AudienceBeginners ages 3 and up. The Vancouver Skating Club offers Pre-CanSkate for brand new skaters ages 3–5 and CanSkate sessions for ages 4–12. CanSkate is open to skaters of all ages and abilities, including those with disabilities and newcomers to Canada.
  • Program FocusCanSkate emphasizes learning basic skating skills such as forward and backward skating, stopping, turning, and balance.
  • Lesson FormatFun and Engaging – The program incorporates active and fun circuits, games, and group activities to keep skaters engaged and motivated.
  • ProgressionCanSkate progresses through stages, building upon fundamental skills to prepare skaters for more advanced levels, including figure skating, hockey, and other ice sports.
  • CoachesSmall group lessons with a low coach-to-student ratio (1:10) are led by Skate Canada certified coaches.
  • EmphasisThe program aims to develop well-rounded skaters who can participate in various ice sports or enjoy skating for recreation. CanSkate also fosters a sense of community and provides opportunities for skaters to make friends and build confidence.
  • EquipmentA pair of skates, a CSA-certified Helmet and mittens

  • Report CardsAt the end of each term, CanSkate skaters receive an online progress report through the Vancouver Skating Club system. This report shows the skills they have been working on and their achievements for the season.
  • Refund Policy - CanSkate & PRE-CanSkate ProgramWithdrawal more than 5 business days before the start date: Full refund less Skate Canada Fee. Withdrawal less than 5 business days but at least 48 hours before the second class: Refund less one class and Skate Canada Fee. After 48 hours prior to the second class: No refunds or credits. For weekly or summer programs, no refunds or credits will be issued if cancelled within 5 business days before the program start date.

Notes

  • Age is determined as of the first day of the session. Date of birth is required not only for program placement but also for Skate Canada membership registration. Membership includes insurance coverage in case of injury.

  • The Skate Canada Membership Fee is an annual fee, valid from September 1 to August 31.
