Conduct On and Off Ice

  • Treat the employees and visitors of the Agrodome, Ice Sports and Karen Magnussen RecCentre with respect.
  • Be courteous to other skaters, coaches, judges, parents, rink employees and visitors at all times. Expect the same in return.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Due to Skate Canada insurance requirements, only registered Skate Canada members are permitted on the ice, except in a medical emergency.
  • Skaters may not “skate up” or “skate down” on any session unless they have received prior approval from the Skating Director.
  • Show consideration for coaches and other skaters involved in lessons during a session. A private lesson should not be interrupted by another skater or any other person unless there is an emergency. Please respect the coach and skaters’ time. Please contact your coach with any questions or concerns or to arrange a meeting to discuss skating development.
  • Promote the well being of fellow skaters by positive encouragement or by reporting any unhealthy or dangerous conduct to coaches or parents.
  • No food or gum should be taken on the ice. Plastic or aluminum water bottles are acceptable but must be left at the boards. Glass bottles are not permitted.
  • Spectators, including parents of skaters, are encouraged to watch quietly from the viewing areas and to refrain from conversing with or offering directions to the skaters on the ice.
  • All skaters on a session not receiving a lesson must patch the ice at the end of each session prior to clearing the ice.

Please review Skate Canada’s Position Statement on Bullying on the Skate Canada website.

Ice Etiquette

The following right-of-way order is to ensure the safety of all skaters and coaches on the ice and is in effect during all club sessions:

  • 1st Priority: Skater skating his or her program with music.

  • 2nd Priority: Skater in a coached lesson.

  • 3rd Priority: Skater in a spin or jump entrance.

It is common etiquette to make extra effort to stay out of the way of priority skaters, however, you do not have to stop skating and stand at the boards.

It is important to be aware and cautious, and considerate of other skaters. Be especially aware that there may be different levels of skaters sharing the ice at the same time and that neither is more important than the other.

  • Profane, abusive, disruptive, inappropriate or disrespectful language, gestures or actions during on ice or off ice sessions will not be tolerated. Disrespect of fellow skaters, coaches, administrators, Board members or arena staff will not be tolerated.
  • Prolonged sitting on the ice after a fall is prohibited. Kicking or digging at the ice surface with skate blades is prohibited.
  • General guidelines for safe skating sessions
  • Keep moving. Look both ways when leaving the boards. Do not linger in the jumping lanes. Socializing with fellow skaters is best done off the ice before or after sessions and not on the ice. Arrive on time for your sessions allowing time to warm up and stretch prior to stepping on the ice to prevent injuries.
  • All CanSkaters must wear a helmet.

Skating Competitions: Skating competitions are held throughout the skating season and are listed on the calendar, culminating with the qualifying competitions Winterskate for StarProgram and Sectional Championship for competitive skaters.

Test Information

Skaters can go through the Skate Canada Test program in several areas:

  • Freeskate
  • Skills
  • Dance
  • Artistic

It takes many years of hard work to complete all the test levels.

STAR 1 – 5 Test Program

Coaches evaluate their own skaters for tests at the STAR 1 – 5 Freeskate, Skills, Dance and Artistic levels. This is done on regular lesson ice. The coach will tell the skater when the test will be done and how to go about applying and paying for it.

Club Tests

Club tests are done on club ice and are evaluated by a judge during a designated test session.  Skaters can take STAR 6 to Gold Level Freeskate, Skills, Dance and Artistic level tests but only if the test session is approved by the BC Coast Region Test Committee and there is a judge available.

Skaters have to apply for their test(s) on-line on the BC Coast Region Test Registry when a coach tells them that they are ready to test.

Centralized Tests

Centralized tests include all of the tests mentioned under Club tests, along with Diamond Dances. These tests are done on Centralized test days at a rink in the BC Coast Region area and are evaluated by a judge.

*All DIAMOND dance tests have to be evaluated at a Centralized test day.

Skaters apply for their test(s) on-line using the BC Coast Region Test Registry.

Tests done at Competitions

Certain competitions allow particular tests to be done. There will be two different panels of judges watching the skater at the same time while the program is being skated.  One will be judging the skater for the competition, and the other will evaluate the skater using test criteria. This usually requires that the skater competes at a level above what she/he has already passed. This is called “skating up”.

Please follow the directions in the Competition Announcement on how to register for a test.

Test Results

Skaters will know if they passed or need to retry their test(s) by the end of the test day. Coaches will review the test marks and comments with the skater. The skater will receive a copy of their test paper – please keep the test paper in a safe spot at home, since the paper may be needed in the future to prove that a skater has passed the test.  The club Test Chair (Assessment Coordinator) will be forwarding test results to Skate Canada for their records.

If you have any questions, please contact Clare Dean, VSC Assessment Coordinator: vsc@vancouverskatingclub.ca
